Breeding before March

Most mares go through what is called anestrus, where they do not cycle during the winter months. If you are looking to have your mare bred earlier than march, your mare will have to be placed under lights for 60 - 90 days prior to the time you are wanting to breed her. I charge $20 a day mare care for a mare under lights. this includes feed, hay, stall, and my cost of labor and electric. 

Otherwise the average mare starts cycling in March after the day light lengthens.
